Open the Book is a nationwide project to introduce the Bible to primary school children. Each week teams of volunteers present a dramatised Bible Story at a school assembly. Using 'The Lion Storyteller Bible' by Bob Hartman, and some simple props and costumes, a story is read and acted out. There is a three-year programme which covers the Old and New Testaments.
In September 2010 a team from St Michael's started Open the Book at Eastnor Primary School. We were delighted when the following year we were invited to take a team into Ledbury Primary School. This means that in these two schools alone nearly 500 children are hearing the Bible each week. There are other teams at schools in Ashperton, Bosbury, Cradley and Much Marcle.
The children really enjoy Open the Book, and we invite them to help us tell the stories – a sea of hands goes up when we ask for volunteers, and audience participation is always enthusiastic! Feedback from the schools is very positive. Recently at Ledbury Primary School a teacher returned after assembly to say how much the children had enjoyed the story; they were just "buzzing" with it.
Open the Book is great fun for everyone, and we pray it will give these children a foundation on which they can build a real faith.
