Worshipping God

Following Jesus

Sharing His Love

Music is a crucial part of our services, and the wider life of St Michael's, and there is always room for more to join in and help.

Under the leadership of our Co-ordinator of Music, Philip Holland, music happens in lots of different ways:

THE ORGAN: A grand 3-manual and pedals instrument with tracker (mechanical) action and 2500 pipes spread over 39 stops. It is regularly tuned and maintained and used for concerts as well as accompanying services. Organ lessons are available from the coordinator of music. The organ is available for practice by arrangement.

THE PIANO:  In 2010 we were fortunate enough to receive a gift to replace our old Broadwood Grand with a superb Kawai Grand. This instrument is used for accompanying services, as well as being used in concerts held in the church.

ESM:   Ensemble St Michael's is our instrumental group, consisting of adults and children who can play any instruments.  It doesn't matter how good you are; Philip will arrange music just for you. At present we have Violins, Viola and 'cello; Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone Bassoon and Piano. When everyone is present we number over 20. The group plays at the All-Age service on the second Sunday of the month and other special services.

Rehearsals are held on Saturday mornings (9.30) fortnightly in church.  Please check our Calendar for details of rehearsals.

We're looking for a bass player and a sensitive percussionist to help with rhythm in the more modern hymns. Please contact Philip if you'd like to come along to a rehearsal to see what you can contribute - you won't be asked to play a solo, unless you want to!

WORSHIP GROUP: We're trying to form another small ensemble to sing and accompany worship songs in services and in small venues where we can share the Good News. Contact Philip if you can help.

SINGING:  Congregational singing is strong as there are many good singers attending, however, many of them have commitments which don't enable them to attend regular choir practice, so for special occasions, Weddings, Funerals and Evensongs an ad-hoc choir is formed. The Coordinator of Music has a list of most of these singers, but if you are interested in helping please let him know, and he can supply dates of forthcoming Weddings and other events.  Contact Philip

On the 3rd Sunday in each month we sing Evensong, rehearsing at 5.15 for the 6.30 service. It would be good to see you there.

YOUNG CHURCH: Philip visits this group during the service and they sing, or play instruments together around the theme of the day.
